Statement of Concern

The climate crisis is already having profound impacts on Australian environments and people and if inadequately addressed will have devastating consequences for the earth and humanity.

Urgent, effective and sustained action must be taken by governments, businesses and populations to keep global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

We, as outdoors people - outdoor educators, guides and enthusiasts, are specifically concerned about the impact climate change will have on our work in the outdoors and our way of life. A warming world increases extreme weather events, including worsening fires, floods, droughts, coastal erosion and biodiversity loss, which will have negative impacts on outdoor places and visitors.

Parks, reserves, conservation areas and all other outdoor places have an inherent value when they provide space and protection for the natural world and its species.

These places enrich our lives and provide many of us with meaningful employment.

We believe everyone - including future generations - should be allowed the same opportunity we have had to enjoy and benefit from biodiversity, landscapes and natural systems, in the same or better condition.

Outdoor recreation is important to Australians and includes, but is not limited to, camping, bushwalking, rock climbing, paddling, abseiling, surfing, skiing, bird watching, fishing, trail-running, canyoning, caving and diving.

Outdoor places provide the Australian public with benefits to mental, physical and social wellbeing, enhance connection to nature and environmental stewardship, and provide opportunities for volunteering, employment and leisure.

We recognise that the world needs to greatly enhance its response to climate change if we are to avoid further, worsening impacts which will affect the outdoors, people and the earth.

We will pursue a safe climate future.
